Visiting Le Tanneur Paris: Discovering the Flagship Boutique and Timeless Handbags
During my recent month in France, one boutique I had been especially looking forward to visiting was Le Tanneur.
I've admired the brand for several years and have loved carrying my Emilie handbag, so finally stepping inside the Paris flagship was one of the stops I was most looking forward to during my time in the city.
Located on Boulevard des Capucines, just a few minutes from the Palais Garnier, Le Tanneur's Paris flagship was easy to add to one of my afternoons exploring Paris. As soon as I stepped inside, I found myself slowing down to take everything in. Between the beautifully displayed collections, the welcoming team, and the stories behind some of Le Tanneur's most iconic designs, it quickly became much more than a shopping stop.
One of the highlights of my visit was spending time with the team. Everyone I met was incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the brand. They shared the story behind Le Tanneur, introduced me to some of the pieces they love most, and answered every question I had along the way. Those conversations are always one of my favorite parts of visiting brands in Paris because they always leave me with a much deeper understanding of the collections.
If you're planning a trip to Paris, I'd absolutely recommend adding Le Tanneur to your itinerary.
A French Leather Goods Brand Since 1898
One of my favorite parts of visiting Le Tanneur was learning the story behind the brand.
I had always known Le Tanneur for its beautiful leather goods, but I didn't realize the Maison's history began with an invention.
In 1898, leatherworker Charles Bonnardel and third-generation tanner Francisque Bornex created a revolutionary leather purse called Sans Couture, meaning "without seams." Instead of using traditional stitching, the design was assembled with rivets, an innovative approach that quickly set Le Tanneur apart.
Just two years later, the Sans Couture purse received a Silver Medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, helping establish Le Tanneur as one of France's pioneering leather goods brands.
More than 125 years later, that same spirit of innovation continues to inspire the brand. Today, Le Tanneur's collections include handbags, wallets, travel accessories, and small leather goods that feel every bit as elegant as they are practical.
One detail I especially loved learning is that the original Sans Couture purse is still part of the collection today. I always enjoy discovering how heritage brands continue to celebrate their history, and seeing a design that has remained part of Le Tanneur's story for more than a century made me appreciate the brand even more.
Inside Le Tanneur's Paris Flagship
📍 16 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris 75009
Stepping inside Le Tanneur's Paris flagship gave me the chance to experience the brand beyond the handbags themselves.
The boutique itself is beautiful, with thoughtfully designed displays that make it easy to explore the different collections at your own pace. I especially enjoyed seeing the handbags, small leather goods, and seasonal colors together, while taking a closer look at the different leathers and finishes in person.
As I explored the boutique, I found myself chatting with the team throughout my visit. They happily answered every question I had, pointed out details I may have otherwise missed, and shared the inspiration behind different collections. Those conversations made exploring the boutique feel incredibly personal and gave me a better understanding of the care and expertise behind each collection.
Discovering the Atelier & Sans Couture Collection
One of the highlights of my visit was spending time discovering Le Tanneur's iconic Sans Couture collection.
The team walked me through the different Sans Couture pieces, sharing the story behind the design while showing me the handbags, wallets, and small leather goods up close. Knowing that the original Sans Couture purse dates back to 1898 made seeing the collection in person feel even more special.
I also loved learning about the different ways these pieces can be personalized. In addition to choosing your own color combinations through the Sans Couture workshop, certain pieces can be customized with a small phrase inside, including "Made in Paris," making them such a meaningful keepsake from a trip to France.
I immediately thought how beautiful one of the wallets or small leather goods would be as a souvenir or a thoughtful gift for someone special.
If you're planning to visit Paris, the flagship also offers the opportunity to reserve a Sans Couture workshop, where a member of the Le Tanneur team assembles your personalized bag or wallet while guiding you through the process. I included a link here if you'd like to learn more or reserve an appointment before your trip.
Adding a Personal Touch
Another feature I enjoyed discovering was Le Tanneur's in-store personalization service.
Selected Le Tanneur leather goods can be personalized with your initials in gold or silver foil, adding a beautiful finishing touch to an already timeless piece. Since the personalization is applied using a hot-stamping machine, it's available on pieces with flat leather surfaces, so not every handbag can be personalized, if you’re interested in getting a stamp on your Le Tanneur piece check with the team directly.
Since I knew my trip to France would always hold such special memories, I decided to add a small M to the leather charm that came with my Emilie handbag. It felt especially meaningful because it represents both my name, Manon, and Maéva, the signature I use to sign off every story with With Amour, M.
It's such a subtle detail, but every time I reach for my bag, I know it'll bring me back to this wonderful month in France and my visit to Le Tanneur's Paris flagship.
I've always loved bringing home pieces that carry a story with them, and I think personalization makes that connection even more meaningful. Whether you're choosing something for yourself or searching for a thoughtful gift, it's a beautiful way to create a piece that's uniquely your own.
My Favorite Pieces
I arrived already knowing how much I love my Emilie handbag in canvas and leather, but seeing the collection in person gave me an even greater appreciation for the silhouette and introduced me to a few new additions to my wish list, learn more about this handbag and how I style it here.
Since returning home to California, Le Tanneur has also unveiled its new Fall/Winter collection, and I've already spotted several beautiful seasonal colors that have caught my eye. I always enjoy seeing how the brand refreshes its collections each season while staying true to the elegant, understated style that first drew me to it.
If I were adding another Le Tanneur bag to my collection, I'd be torn between two styles.
The first is the Emilie Medium Double Flap Handbag in Grained Leather in Tan Brown. Since I already own the canvas and leather version, it was fun to see how beautifully the silhouette translates into an all-leather design. The warm tan color immediately caught my eye, and I can easily imagine it becoming one of those handbags I'd reach for throughout the year.
The second is the Emilie Small Handbag in Grained Leather, a style I found myself coming back to throughout my visit. Its proportions feel so elegant, and I can picture it styled just as easily with relaxed everyday outfits as it would with a dress for dinner while traveling.
I've linked my favorite Le Tanneur pieces below, including the bags currently at the top of my wish list, along with a few leather accessories that also stood out during my visit. If you're discovering Le Tanneur for the first time or looking to add another piece to your collection, I hope this edit gives you a little inspiration.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is discovering brands in the places they call home.
