Inside Polène Paris: Visiting the Richelieu Boutique & Choosing the Cyme Mini

During my most recent month back home in France, there were a handful of boutiques I knew I wanted to visit while I was in Paris, and Polène was definitely one of them!

The Cyme Mini had been on my wishlist for quite some time, but rather than ordering it from California, I decided to wait until I was back home in France to finally see it in person. I wanted the chance to compare the different colors and leathers and see how the bag actually felt before making my decision.

A Sunday at Polène in Paris

I had originally planned to visit Polène during the week, partly because I had seen the queues outside on previous trips and assumed a weekday might be a little quieter.

Instead, I happened to walk by on a Sunday just before lunchtime. There was a line, of course, but it didn't look nearly as intimidating as some of the queues I'd seen in the past, so I decided to join it!

While I was waiting, a member of the Polène team came through the line asking which style and color I was interested in and checked availability before I entered the boutique. Since I already knew I wanted to see the Cyme Mini in both camel and black, it was helpful to know that the styles I was considering were in stock before I made it inside.

Thankfully, the line moved much faster than I expected, and before long I was stepping inside.

The boutique was lively, with people moving between the displays, trying bags over their shoulders, comparing colors, and asking to see different styles. But despite how busy it was, I never felt rushed.

I was helped by an associate who was incredibly kind and patient, bringing out several styles for me to compare and answering all of my questions along the way.

I had come in particularly excited to see the Cyme Mini, but having so much of Polène's collection in front of me gave me the chance to experience several of the bags I had admired online over the years.

The Story Behind Polène

Founded in 2016 by three siblings, Polène has built a distinctive identity around an approach to leather goods that feels both minimal and sculptural.

The leather goods are designed in the Maison’s Paris studio, where much of the creativity comes from the way the leather itself is shaped. Rather than relying on prominent logos or embellishment, Polène uses folds, curves, draping, and weaving to create the organic silhouettes that have become so recognizable across the collection.

It's one of the things that has always drawn me to the brand. Each design feels distinctive in its own way, with so much of its character coming from the construction and the way the leather is shaped.

Polène sources its leather from certified tanneries in Spain and Italy, while production is entrusted to leather artisans in Ubrique, Spain, a town known for its longstanding tradition of leather goods craftsmanship.

Seeing the collection together in Paris made me appreciate that approach even more.

Although the silhouettes can be quite different from one another, there’s a clear thread running through them: sculptural shapes, thoughtful construction, and a distinctive approach to leather that makes each design feel recognizably Polène. The Cyme Mini was a perfect example of that.

Choosing My Cyme Mini

I had seen the Cyme Mini styled countless ways before my visit, but in person I could finally appreciate the details that had originally drawn me to it.

The folded leather gives the tote its distinctive sculptural shape, while the sides can be arranged to subtly change the silhouette. It's one of the things I've always loved about the Cyme: it has a beautifully understated feel, but the construction gives it a shape that feels immediately recognizable.

The size felt right almost immediately.

The color was another story.

I had narrowed it down to black and camel, and I spent quite a while going back and forth between the two.

As much as I loved the black, I kept finding myself drawn to the camel. When I started thinking about what I actually wear, the decision became easier. So much of my wardrobe is made up of creams, white, linen, denim, soft browns, and other warm neutrals, and I knew the camel would pair effortlessly with pieces I already owned.

So, after months of having the Cyme Mini on my wishlist, I finally made my decision. The camel came home with me.

Exploring More of the Polène Collection

While the Cyme Mini was the bag I had come in particularly excited to see, I naturally took the opportunity to explore more of the collection while I was there.

One of the styles I especially loved in person was the Mokki. Its shape immediately caught my attention, and seeing the proportions and construction up close only made me like it more. By the time I left, it had earned a firm place on my wishlist.

I also spent some time looking at the larger Cyme in black.

After choosing camel for the Mini, I found myself loving the larger Cyme in black as well. Its proportions make it such a beautiful option for a work tote, and I could easily picture it paired with a blazer and trousers, a knit with denim, or so many of the timeless everyday pieces already in my wardrobe.

It's one of the things I enjoy most about visiting boutiques in person. Even when I arrive with a particular piece in mind, I almost always leave with a better understanding of the collection as a whole.

Is Polène Worth the Price?

If you’ve been considering a Polène bag, you’ve probably wondered about the pricing, quality, and whether the bags are worth the price.

For me, purchasing Polène in France changes the equation quite a bit.

At the time of my purchase, the Cyme Mini was priced lower in France than it would have been to order online in the United States, and since I now live in California, I was also able to take advantage of the VAT refund available to eligible visitors from outside the European Union. Between the lower European price and the VAT refund, I felt comfortable with what I paid and feel the Cyme Mini was worth it at that price point.

Of course, value is incredibly personal, and for me, a large part of it comes down to something quite simple: I genuinely love the design.

The sculptural quality of the Cyme is what made me want the bag in the first place. The folds give an otherwise minimal tote a distinctive shape, while the understated leather finish keeps it easy to wear with the clothes I already own. Even after seeing the wider collection in person, it was still the bag I wanted to leave with.

As for quality, my experience so far has been positive. I've been happy with the textured leather, construction, and overall finish of the bag. That said, I've only owned it since my trip to Paris, and I think the real test of quality is how something holds up over time.

I’ll be interested to see how the leather, structure, and handles continue to wear over the years. For now, I'm very happy with my purchase and feel good about what I paid for it in France.

Planning a Visit to Polène Paris?

If Polène is on your Paris itinerary, I would absolutely recommend experiencing the collection in person if you have the opportunity.

The boutiques are incredibly popular, so don't be surprised if you find a queue outside. In my experience, though, the line moved much faster than I anticipated.

If you already have a particular bag in mind, it also helps to know the style and colors you'd like to see before you arrive. During my visit, a member of the team asked for this information while I was waiting and checked availability before I entered.

Seeing the collection in person can also be especially helpful if you're deciding between several options. Colors can look different than they do online, proportions make much more sense once you're actually carrying a bag, and having several styles together makes it much easier to compare them.

If you're visiting from outside the European Union, it's also worth looking into the VAT refund process before you shop. Eligibility and procedures can change, so I recommend checking the current requirements ahead of your trip.

Final Thoughts

A few months later, I’m still so happy with the Cyme Mini I chose in Paris.

The camel has been incredibly easy to style with my wardrobe, but it’s the sculptural shape that continues to make the bag feel so distinctive to me. It has exactly the kind of understated character I was hoping for: easy to wear often, but special enough to still feel memorable every time I carry it.

I also love the memory attached to it. Choosing it during my month back home in France makes the bag feel that much more meaningful to me.

Of course, I’ll be able to speak more fully to the quality with time, but so far I’ve been genuinely pleased with how the bag looks, feels, and fits into my wardrobe!
