What to Pack for Spring in Paris: A Timeless Capsule Wardrobe with 15 Looks

A simple capsule for navigating spring in the city

Shop the Capsule

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Paris. The city slowly comes back to life after winter, trees begin to bloom across the gardens, and suddenly everyone is back outside enjoying long walks along the Seine or lingering at café terraces.

As someone who grew up in the South of France, Paris has always been a place I love to stop for a few days whenever I travel home to visit family. Whether on the way there or on the way back, I always try to spend a little time in the city, wandering the neighborhoods, revisiting favorite cafés, and enjoying the rhythm of Paris in the spring.

But while spring in Paris is charming, the weather can also be a little unpredictable.

It’s not unusual to experience a mix of sunshine, cooler mornings, and occasional rain showers all within the same day. One moment the sky can be bright and clear, and the next a quick spring rain rolls through the city.

Typical Spring Temperatures in Paris: (March: 8–13°C / 46–55°F • April: 10–16°C / 50–61°F • May: 13–20°C / 55–68°F)

Because of this, packing for Paris in the spring is really about versatility. Layers you can easily add or remove throughout the day tend to work best.

With changing weather and plenty of walking around the city, a small capsule wardrobe built around timeless pieces makes getting dressed simple while still feeling polished.

For this capsule, I focused on a neutral base so the pieces mix and match easily. Of course, you can absolutely adapt it by swapping in your favorite colors or accessories and shoes. The key is simply choosing pieces that work well together so you can create multiple outfits without overpacking, while still leaving a little room in your suitcase for any beautiful finds you might discover while shopping in Paris!

While this capsule was designed with Paris in mind, the same pieces work beautifully in other cities with similar spring weather, like London or Brussels, or simply as inspiration for building a classic everyday wardrobe.

Below you’ll find 15 outfits styled from the capsule to inspire easy looks, whether for travel or everyday dressing. I’ve also included a few personal travel notes for visiting Paris in the spring at the end of the guide.

So grab a café, get comfortable, and let’s take a little trip to Paris together!

Look 1: Trench & Tailored Trousers

A classic trench layered over tailored black trousers and a crisp white shirt creates one of the most timeless outfits you can wear in Paris. Finished with ballet flats, a structured top-handle bag, and simple gold jewelry, the look feels polished yet effortless, perfect for wandering through the city while still feeling put together.

I styled this look with a pair of classic ballet flats from Margaux. I recently got the Demi flats in brown, and my first impression is that the reviews are absolutely true, they’re incredibly comfortable. I’m planning to wear them on a full day of walking soon and will report back once I’ve properly put them to the test!

  • Why It Works: The trench adds structure and warmth for cooler spring mornings, while the tailored black trousers and crisp white shirt keep the look classic, polished, and effortlessly Parisian.

  • Style Tip: Slightly roll the sleeves of the shirt and leave the top buttons undone for a more relaxed feel. You can also wear the trench open for an effortless look, or cinch the belt at the waist if you want a more defined silhouette.

  • When to Wear: Morning coffee in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a walk through the Jardin du Luxembourg, browsing bookstores along the Seine, or spending an afternoon wandering through the galleries of the Marais.

Look 2: Trench & Satin Trousers

A classic trench layered over soft ivory satin trousers and a simple black sleeveless top creates a look that feels elegant while still easy to wear throughout the day. Finished with ballet flats, a structured top-handle bag, and delicate gold jewelry, the outfit feels polished but relaxed, perfect for wandering through the city.

I styled this look with a gorgeous bag from Paris/64. I love this brand and also own their Mini Lumière bag, which I absolutely adore. If you're curious about Paris/64, you can learn more about them in an article I wrote here.

  • Why It Works: The satin trousers add a soft, fluid element that contrasts beautifully with the structure of the trench coat. The black top keeps the look simple and balanced, while the neutral accessories give the outfit that classic Parisian feel.

  • Style Tip: Satin trousers can be surprisingly versatile. During the day they pair beautifully with ballet flats and simple layers like a trench. In the evening, you could easily dress them up with a small heel and remove the trench for a slightly more elevated look.

  • When to Wear: A morning coffee near the Palais Royal gardens, browsing boutiques in Rue de Rivoli, a museum afternoon near the Louvre, or an early evening aperitif along the Seine.

Look 3: Trench & Straight-Leg Denim

Shop the Look

A classic trench layered over relaxed straight-leg denim and a simple black sleeveless top creates an easy, everyday look that still feels polished. Paired with clean sneakers, a structured handbag, and delicate gold jewelry, the outfit feels effortless while still put together enough for a full day exploring the city.

I styled this look with Veja Volley sneakers. I actually own this style in the cream and brown version, which I recently ordered and also featured in my Early Spring Capsule for the South of France. I’ve been wearing them quite a bit. So far they’ve been extremely comfortable, which is always important for days with a lot of walking. Seeing them in this cream version is also making me think I may need another pair… or possibly even the blue.

  • Why It Works: The trench adds structure and balance to the relaxed feel of the denim and sneakers. The black sleeveless top keeps the look streamlined, while the neutral accessories maintain a timeless palette that feels very at home in Paris.

  • Style Tip: Straight-leg denim is one of the easiest silhouettes to travel with. It works just as well with sneakers during the day as it does with ballet flats or small heels in the evening.

  • When to Wear: Morning coffee and a croissant, wandering through neighborhood markets, an afternoon at the Musée d’Orsay, or a relaxed stroll along the Seine.

Look 4: Trench & Tailored Trousers with Heels

Shop the Look

A classic trench layered over tailored black trousers and a simple black sleeveless top creates a look that feels sleek and refined while still easy to wear throughout the day. Swapping ballet flats for a small heel instantly elevates the outfit, making it feel a little more polished while still maintaining that effortless Parisian simplicity.

I styled this look with a pair of heels from Inez, a brand I keep seeing mentioned when it comes to comfortable heels. I’d be very curious to test a pair and see how they perform for a full day in the city.

  • Why It Works: The monochrome black base creates a clean, streamlined silhouette, while the trench softens the look and adds warmth for cooler spring mornings. The small heel adds just enough elevation to make the outfit feel a bit more dressed up without sacrificing comfort.

  • Style Tip: This is a great outfit to transition from day to evening. During the day, wear the trench open for a relaxed feel. If you’re heading to dinner or drinks later, you can belt the trench or remove it entirely to let the tailored pieces stand on their own.

  • When to Wear: Lunch in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, an afternoon gallery visit in the Marais, or an early evening dinner near the Palais Royal.

Finished with ballet flats, a structured handbag, and delicate gold jewelry, the look feels polished while still relaxed enough for wandering through Paris.

I styled this look with a beautiful bag from Ateliers Auguste, a French brand that I truly adore. If you’d like to learn more about the brand and see which bag I added to my own collection, you can read more in this article. This particular style featured here might also need to come home with me on my next trip to Paris!

  • Why It Works: The soft tones of the knit and satin trousers create a light, elegant palette that pairs beautifully with the classic trench. The structured bag adds a refined touch, while the ballet flats keep the outfit practical for a full day of walking.

  • Style Tip: Lightweight knits like this are perfect for spring travel. You can wear them on their own during cooler mornings, and if the afternoon warms up, simply drape the sweater over your shoulders for a relaxed Parisian look.

A classic trench layered over relaxed straight-leg denim and a soft neutral knit creates an easy outfit that feels both comfortable and polished. Paired with clean sneakers, a structured top-handle bag, and simple gold jewelry, the look is perfect for long days exploring the city while still feeling effortlessly put together.

I added a cashmere bandana from the French brand Kujten, which I absolutely adore. It’s such a chic little extra layer for those chillier spring mornings. I’ve noticed this scarf a lot whenever I’m in Paris, and it’s clearly a favorite. Their pieces feel timeless and classic. If you’re curious about the brand, you can learn more about them in the article as well as in my guide to 16 Chic Accessory Brands That Elevate Everyday Style.

  • Why It Works: The trench adds structure while the knit and denim keep the look relaxed and easy to wear. The sneakers make the outfit comfortable for walking, while the small accessories elevate the overall look.

  • Style Tip: A small scarf or bandana is one of the easiest pieces to travel with. It adds warmth in the morning and can be worn loosely around the neck. You can also layer a simple white tee underneath the knit so that when the day warms up, you can remove a layer and still feel comfortable.

A classic trench layered over tailored black trousers and a soft neutral knit creates a timeless look that feels polished yet easy to wear throughout the day. Finished with ballet flats, a structured top-handle bag, and simple gold jewelry, the outfit feels elegant without feeling overly formal, perfect for a day spent exploring the city.

I added a sleek headband from the French brand Alexandre de Paris, which you can also shop at Nordstrom if you're in the United States. I love how refined and minimal this style feels. I’ve been seeing these types of headbands everywhere lately, and they remind me a bit of a 90s throwback to Caroline Bessette’s style, which I personally adore (can you tell I’ve been watching ‘Love Story’?). I actually just ordered a similar one from J.Crew to try as well if you’re looking for a more accessible alternative.

  • Why It Works: The structured trench balances the softness of the knit while the tailored trousers keep the silhouette clean and elegant. Small accessories like the headband and gold jewelry elevate the look while still keeping everything understated.

  • Style Tip: Simple accessories can completely transform an outfit. A sleek headband like this instantly makes even the most classic pieces feel a bit more styled and intentional.

  • When to Wear: Morning coffee in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries, browsing the book stalls along the Seine, or an afternoon museum visit near the Louvre.

Look 8: Trench, Cardigan & Satin Trousers

A classic trench layered over soft satin trousers and a textured black cardigan creates a look that feels elegant while still easy to wear throughout the day. Paired with a small heel, a structured top-handle bag, and delicate gold jewelry, the outfit feels polished with just the right amount of refinement.

The cardigan in this look is from the French brand Ba&sh, a label I’ve always loved for its effortless Parisian pieces. I’ve actually been eyeing this style for years. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a similar option, I also own the Betty cardigan from Sézane in black and absolutely love it. It’s one of those pieces that layers beautifully in spring and works with so many outfits. I also recently added the Merino Wool Collarless Cropped Jacket from Quince to my wardrobe and have been really enjoying it. It has a similar polished feel and works wonderfully as a light layer in transitional weather, you can also view it here in this article I wrote.

  • Why It Works: The softness of the satin trousers balances nicely with the structure of the trench, while the cardigan adds texture and warmth. The small heel elevates the outfit just enough to make it feel a little more dressed up.

  • Style Tip: Cardigans like this are perfect for layering in spring. Wear it buttoned as a top during cooler moments, or open over a simple tee once the day warms up.

  • When to Wear: Dinner in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a wine bar in the 11th arrondissement, an evening stroll through the Palais Royal arcades, or a relaxed dinner along the Left Bank.

Look 9: Trench, Cardigan & Straight-Leg Denim

A classic trench layered over relaxed straight-leg denim and a crisp white tee creates an outfit that feels simple, polished, and easy to wear. Paired with clean sneakers, a structured top-handle bag, and delicate gold jewelry, the look feels effortlessly put together while still comfortable for a full day exploring the city.

The gorgeous trench in this look is from COS, and the white tee layered underneath is also from them, a piece I’ve owned for years. I love this tee because the fabric has a slightly structured feel rather than being thin or flimsy, and the neckline is perfect for layering. It’s one of those tees that works beautifully under a crewneck sweater when you want just a hint of the collar to show.

  • Why It Works: The clean lines of the white tee balance beautifully with the relaxed denim, while the trench adds structure and polish. The sneakers keep the outfit comfortable and practical for walking around the city.

  • Style Tip: A well-cut white tee is one of the most versatile pieces to pack. It works on its own during warmer afternoons and layers effortlessly under cardigans, knits, or a trench when temperatures are cooler.

  • When to Wear: Picking up pastries at a neighborhood boulangerie, exploring the Canal Saint-Martin area, or spending a relaxed afternoon browsing the bookstalls along the Seine.

A classic trench layered over tailored black trousers, a simple white tee, and a textured black cardigan creates a look that feels effortlessly polished while still easy to wear throughout the day. Finished with ballet flats, a structured handbag, and delicate gold jewelry, the outfit strikes a beautiful balance between relaxed and refined.

The trousers in this look are from the Australian brand Posse, a label I’ve really come to love. I actually own one of their tops that I was lucky enough to find on sale last year, and the quality is truly beautiful. Their pieces tend to be more of an investment, but the designs feel timeless and classic, which makes them the kind of wardrobe staples you can wear for years.

If you’re looking for a more accessible alternative, I’m also a big fan of the Effortless Pants from Aritzia. I own them in both linen and crepette, and they’ve become some of my go-to trousers.

  • Why It Works: The crisp white tee keeps the look fresh and simple, while the cardigan adds texture and warmth. The tailored trousers elevate the outfit, and the trench brings everything together with a timeless layer that feels right at home in Paris.

  • Style Tip: Wearing a cardigan over a white tee creates an easy layered look that still feels clean and structured. If the weather warms up, you can remove the trench and keep the cardigan for a lighter layer.

A classic trench layered over soft satin trousers and a crisp white shirt creates a look that feels timeless and effortlessly elegant. Paired with ballet flats, a structured top-handle bag, and simple gold jewelry, the outfit feels polished while still relaxed enough for a full day in the city.

The shirt in this look is the Tomboy Shirt from Sézane, which I’ve owned for years and absolutely love. It’s one of those pieces that never goes out of style. The cut is relaxed but still polished, making it incredibly easy to wear with everything from denim to more tailored trousers like these.

  • Why It Works: The clean structure of the white shirt balances beautifully with the softness of the satin trousers, while the trench ties everything together with a timeless outer layer.

  • Style Tip: A slightly oversized white shirt like this works beautifully tucked in, but you can also leave a few buttons undone and roll the sleeves for a more relaxed look.

  • When to Wear: Visiting the Palais Garnier, exploring the Musée Rodin gardens, or enjoying an afternoon of shopping along Rue Saint-Honoré.

Look 12: Trench, White Shirt & Straight-Leg Denim

Shop the Look

A classic trench layered over relaxed straight-leg denim and a crisp white shirt creates one of the most timeless outfits you can wear in Paris. Finished with clean sneakers, a structured handbag, and delicate gold jewelry, the look feels polished while still comfortable enough for a full day moving around the city.

The denim in this look is from Madewell, which has long been one of my go-to brands when it comes to jeans. I’ve always found their fits to be both comfortable and flattering. I also love shopping at Levi’s for classic denim, and I was recently pleasantly surprised by how comfortable Quince’s denim is as well.

  • Why It Works: The white shirt keeps the outfit fresh and structured, while the denim and sneakers add a relaxed, everyday feel. The trench brings everything together with a classic outer layer that instantly elevates even the simplest pieces.

  • Style Tip: Try wearing the shirt slightly half-tucked into the denim for a relaxed, effortless feel. Rolling the sleeves a bit can also soften the look and make the outfit feel less formal.

  • When to Wear: A morning stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries, exploring the paths of the Jardin du Luxembourg, or enjoying a relaxed afternoon walk through Parc Monceau.

Look 13: Trench & Knit Dress

Shop the Look

A classic trench layered over a soft knit dress creates a look that feels feminine, polished, and perfectly suited for spring in Paris. Paired with ballet flats, a structured top-handle bag, and delicate gold jewelry, the outfit feels elegant while still comfortable enough for a full day exploring the city.

The dress in this look is a knit style from the French brand Sandro. I personally love their knit dresses. I bought a blue one in Paris a few years ago and still receive compliments on it every time I wear it. They’re one of the easiest pieces to throw on when you want to feel instantly put together, and each season Sandro releases beautiful variations. I’m especially loving this white one for spring, and it makes for a great option on slightly warmer days.

  • Why It Works: The soft texture of the knit dress contrasts beautifully with the structure of the trench coat, creating a balanced silhouette that feels both refined and effortless.

  • Style Tip: Let the trench hang open so the dress remains visible and creates a long, elegant line.

  • When to Wear: A relaxed lunch on a café terrace, strolling through Saint-Germain-des-Prés, or walking along the Seine on a warmer spring afternoon.

Look 14: Knit Dress for Evening

Shop the Look

The same knit dress instantly transforms into an evening-ready outfit with a simple change of accessories. Paired with elegant heels, a structured top-handle bag, and refined gold jewelry, the look feels sophisticated while still maintaining the effortless ease of the original daytime outfit.

One of the things I love most about a great knit dress is how versatile it can be. The same piece that works beautifully during the day can easily transition into the evening with just a few thoughtful swaps. It’s the kind of piece that packs incredibly well for a trip because it gives you multiple outfits without taking up extra space in your suitcase.

  • Why I Love It: It’s one of those pieces that instantly makes you feel put together with very little effort.

  • Style Tip: Swap flats or sneakers for a small heel and opt for slightly more polished accessories to elevate the look for evening.

  • When to Wear: Dinner at a cozy bistro, drinks at a wine bar, or an evening out exploring Paris after sunset.

Look 15: Trench & Classic Black Dress

Shop the Look

For a more elevated evening option, a classic black dress layered with a timeless trench coat creates a look that feels effortlessly refined. Paired with elegant heels, a structured top-handle bag, and simple gold jewelry, the outfit feels polished and sophisticated while still maintaining the understated ease that Paris style is known for.

This dress immediately made me think of something Audrey Hepburn would wear. The silhouette is beautifully classic, while the subtle neckline detail keeps it interesting without feeling overdone. Pieces like this never really go out of style, which makes them especially great to pack for a trip when you want something that feels timeless and dependable for an evening out.

  • Why It Works: The simplicity of the black dress creates a sleek foundation, while the trench adds structure and a touch of Parisian polish. Together, they create a balanced look that feels elegant without trying too hard.

  • Style Tip: Keep accessories minimal and let the silhouette of the dress speak for itself. A small structured bag and delicate gold jewelry add just enough interest without competing with the clean lines of the outfit.

  • When to Wear: An elevated dinner in Paris, a night at the opera, cocktails at a chic hotel bar, or an evening stroll along the Seine after sunset.

Styling Notes for the Capsule

When building a capsule wardrobe for spring in Paris, I focus on pieces that feel timeless, versatile, and easy to wear. The goal is to create outfits that feel polished without being overly complicated, especially when you’ll likely be spending most of the day exploring the city.

  • Play with texture: Mixing fabrics is one of the easiest ways to elevate a simple outfit. Soft knits, crisp cotton shirts, satin trousers, and lightweight wool layers add depth while still remaining comfortable for travel.

  • Balance relaxed pieces with structure: Parisian style often feels effortless because relaxed pieces are balanced with more tailored ones. A classic trench over relaxed denim or tailored trousers paired with a soft knit creates a look that feels polished without looking overly styled.

  • Let accessories add personality: A silk scarf, structured handbag, delicate jewelry, or a simple headband can completely transform even the most minimal outfit.

  • Think in simple outfit formulas: Easy combinations like trench + denim + knit, satin trousers + simple top, or a white shirt with tailored trousers make it easier to mix and match pieces throughout the trip.

  • Choose pieces that transition from day to evening: Pieces like satin trousers, a knit dress, or tailored black trousers can easily move from daytime exploring to dinner with a simple change of shoes or accessories.

A Few Travel Notes for Spring in Paris

Spring is one of my favorite times to visit Paris. The flowers begin to bloom across the city and the gardens slowly come back to life, but the weather can still change quickly throughout the day.

  • Check the forecast before packing: Spring temperatures can vary quite a bit between cool mornings and warmer afternoons, so knowing the expected range will help you decide which layers you’ll actually need. For example, last spring when I was visiting my family in the South of France and spending a few days in Paris with my sister, we ended up experiencing quite a bit of rain. You can read more about that trip and what I ended up wearing in this article.

  • Prioritize versatile layers: A trench coat, a cardigan, and a small scarf are some of my favorite pieces to pack. Mornings can still feel a bit chilly, but these layers make it easy to adjust throughout the day while still keeping outfits polished.

  • Keep a small umbrella with you: Spring showers can appear quickly in Paris, and having a compact umbrella in your bag means you can simply keep exploring the city rather than running for cover. You can of course pack one from home, but they’re also easy to find from the many vendors around the city, and sometimes even from your hotel. In a way, it can even become a small souvenir from your trip.

    • One thing I always remind people is to embrace the rain. Paris is incredibly romantic even during a spring shower. Don’t let a little rain slow you down. Wander through the gardens, duck into a cozy café, and enjoy a glass of wine while the rain passes.

  • Plan footwear with the gardens in mind: Many paths in places like the Jardin du Luxembourg or the Jardin du Palais Royal are made of a sand and gravel mixture. After rain they can become a bit muddy, so it’s worth checking the forecast and bringing weather-friendly shoes if needed.

  • Choose a cohesive color palette: Packing pieces in complementary neutrals like ivory, denim, navy, and warm brown helps create many outfit combinations without needing to bring too many items. Of course, you can always adapt the palette to include your favorite colors and accessories to bring out your personal style. After all, it’s Paris, ma chérie, have fun with it!

  • Leave a little room in your suitcase: Paris is full of beautiful boutiques, and chances are you’ll discover something you want to bring home. If you’re planning to shop, you can also explore my Paris Shopping Map, where I’ve saved many of my favorite boutiques and brands around the city.

    • It can also be worth saving larger purchases for France, since visitors from outside the EU are often eligible for a VAT refund on certain items, which can make investment pieces a bit more attractive.

  • Traveling beyond Paris? If your trip also includes the South of France, you may enjoy my Early Spring Capsule for the South of France, which follows a similar approach to dressing for transitional spring weather.

Final Thoughts

Packing for Paris in the spring doesn’t need to be complicated. A small collection of timeless pieces, layered thoughtfully, can carry you through everything from cool mornings to warmer afternoons in the city.

What I love most about a capsule like this is how effortlessly the pieces work together. A trench, a great pair of trousers or denim, a crisp shirt, and a few simple accessories can create dozens of outfits that feel polished without requiring a large suitcase.

Spring also happens to be one of the most magical times to experience Paris. The gardens begin to bloom, café terraces fill back up with people, and the entire city feels like it’s slowly waking up again after winter.

Whether you're planning a trip to Paris, visiting another European city with similar spring weather, or simply looking for inspiration for your everyday wardrobe, I hope this capsule helps make getting dressed feel a little easier and a little more enjoyable.

And if you do find yourself in Paris this spring, take your time wandering the streets, stop for a coffee at a small neighborhood café, and leave a little space in your suitcase for the beautiful pieces you might discover along the way!
