1. Sézane
Sézane has been one of my go-to French brands for years, especially when it comes to knitwear. Founded in Paris in 2013 by Morgane Sézalory, the brand has become known for timeless wardrobe staples with that effortless French feel, and their knits are some of the pieces I return to season after season.
I personally own the Gaspard, Barry and Betty in several colorways, and the quality has held up beautifully over the years. They are the kind of sweaters I continue to pull back out every fall, which is always a good sign for me when it comes to building a wardrobe around pieces you genuinely love wearing.
This season, Sézane has added even more knitwear to the collection, and a few new styles immediately caught my eye. I especially love the Joseph Jumper in brown, with its rich autumnal tone and relaxed feel, as well as the Pauline Jumper in black, which feels a little more polished and incredibly easy to style.
Highlights: Parisian fashion brand known for timeless wardrobe staples, feminine details and an especially strong knitwear collection.
Best For: Classic French knits, versatile wardrobe staples, soft layering pieces, rich seasonal colors and sweaters you can bring back out year after year.
2. Kujten
Kujten is one of those brands that feels like a true go-to for cashmere in France. Founded by longtime friends Carole Benaroya and Stéphanie Eriksson, the Parisian brand was born from their shared love of fashion and, more specifically, cashmere. After traveling to Mongolia, where some of the world’s finest cashmere is sourced, they set out to create a more contemporary take on the material with a focus on quality, color and beautifully considered details.
You may have already come across Kujten through their signature cashmere bandanas and scarves, but their knitwear collection is just as beautiful. The pieces feel elevated while still being incredibly wearable, and the quality is designed to last for years, which is exactly what I look for in a really good knit.
There are honestly so many beautiful styles this season that it is hard to choose a favorite. I especially love the Ulla Crop with its funnel-neck silhouette, which feels very current right now, while the Caroline Cardigan has that timeless quality you could easily wear year after year.
And at the very top of my own wishlist? One of Kujten’s iconic cashmere scarves. They are such a signature piece from the brand and one of those accessories I can imagine keeping for a very long time.

Surprise Paris is another French brand I always think of for knitwear, especially if you love color. Their collections are filled with soft, cozy knits in everything from timeless neutrals to more vibrant shades, and I especially love the reds and blues this season, which feel so perfect for fall.
I actually stopped by their boutique in Paris this summer and have to admit I’m regretting not bringing one home with me. Lesson learned: you can always make it fit in your suitcase!
The brand also places a strong focus on thoughtful production, with 90% of its pieces made in Europe through family-run workshops in Italy, Turkey, Portugal and Poland. Surprise works with natural fibers including wool, mohair, cashmere and alpaca, with an emphasis on quality, animal welfare and producing quantities that are adapted to demand.

5. Hartford
Hartford is one of those brands I especially love because, while it is French, there is such a strong California influence running through the collections. As someone who is Franco-Californian myself, I can definitely see a lot of my own personal style reflected in the brand’s pieces.
Hartford was created by Yves Chareton in the United States in 1979 before the studio later returned to Paris. The brand is built around reworking classic American wardrobe staples with a more refined European sensibility, blending everything from vintage-inspired shirting to relaxed knitwear and easy everyday layers. That mix of French polish and West Coast ease is really what makes the brand stand out to me.
Their knitwear is especially beautiful, with pieces in merino wool, alpaca and cashmere, and they also have a really strong men’s selection. This season, I especially love the Mathy Sweater, which gives a fresh take on the argyle style I have been seeing everywhere lately.
I also love the classic gray Mino Sweater. Layered over a simple white tee, it feels so effortless and chic. The Mybone is another favorite and looks incredibly cozy. I would pair it with ivory silk or satin trousers for an outfit that feels comfortable while still being really elevated.

Founded in the Ardèche region of France, the Maison has spent six generations building its expertise around fine knitwear, with a particular focus on beautiful materials, craftsmanship and pieces designed to last.
What I especially love about Montagut is the depth of its knitwear heritage. The Maison works with cashmere, merino wool, silk and its signature Fil Lumière®, while overseeing the creative process from its Paris design studio through to production in its own workshop in Braga, Portugal. That continuity of savoir-faire gives the collection such a strong sense of identity.

Caring for Cashmere & Knitwear
A few simple habits can help keep your favorite knits looking beautiful for years. Always follow the care instructions on the individual garment first, but these are a few general rules I like to keep in mind:
Wash less often: Quality wool naturally has odor-resistant properties, so your knitwear usually does not need to be washed after every wear. Airing your sweater out for a few hours can often be enough to refresh it.
Wash gently: When washing is needed, use cold or lukewarm water and a small amount of detergent made for wool or cashmere. Avoid soaking for too long, wringing or using fabric softener, which can affect the fibers.
Dry flat: Wet knitwear can stretch easily, so gently remove excess water with a towel, reshape the piece and allow it to dry flat rather than hanging it or placing it in the dryer.
Fold instead of hang: Hanging can gradually stretch heavier knits and change their shape, so folding is usually the better option for storage.
Remove pilling gently: Some pilling can naturally happen with wear and friction. A cashmere comb or fabric shaver used carefully can help refresh the surface.
Protect your knits in storage: Make sure pieces are clean and completely dry before storing them, and cedar can be useful for helping deter moths.
Final Thoughts
I hope this edit gave you plenty of inspiration for fall and winter and introduced you to a few French knitwear brands you may not have explored yet. From timeless cashmere and classic cardigans to brighter colors, romantic details and more sculptural silhouettes, I love how much personality knitwear can bring to a cold-weather wardrobe.
A beautiful sweater is also one of those pieces I really think is worth choosing carefully. With the right materials, fit and care, it can become something you reach for year after year, whether you are layering it under a trench coat in early fall, pairing it with wool trousers and coats through winter, or simply styling it with denim for an easy everyday look.
There are definitely a few pieces from this edit making their way onto my own wishlist, and I have a feeling I’ll keep coming back to these collections as more knitwear arrives throughout the fall and winter season.
I hope you found a few favorites of your own, whether you are looking for a new everyday staple, an investment cashmere piece or simply a little inspiration for the colder months ahead!
